We're Designing How We Live. Why I became Well Certified.

Updated: Jan 5

A mother and daughter in grey pajamas, sit cross-legged, hands at their knees, cucumbers on their eyes and towels covering their hair appear ready to relax and meditate.

We’re not designing places to live. We’re designing how we live. This and many other reasons are why I became WELL certified. Below I'll outline the benefits of the Well Building Standard.

The International Well Building Institute, developed the Well Building standard. This took them over 10 years and was backed by the latest scientific research, WELL sets out pathways for accomplishing health-first factors that help every one of us to do our best work and be our best selves by supporting our physical and mental health. When we design our buildings, we define how we sleep, what we eat and how we feel throughout the day.

WELL is grounded in a body of medical research that explores the connection between the buildings where we spend more than 90 percent of our time, and the health and wellness of its occupants. The standard is broken down into the following concepts Air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort & mind.

This is important as we head back to the post pandemic work place. The WELL Health-Safety Rating includes strategies to help:

  • Keep spaces clean and sanitized

  • Provide essential health benefits and services

  • Communicate health and safety efforts

  • Prepare for an emergency

  • Assess air and water quality

A green garden meets an uneven, jagged edge installation of hardwood floor planks.

Designed to be implemented at scale, the WELL Health-Safety Rating can be applied to various sectors and building types, including:

  • Office buildings

  • Residential and retail spaces

  • Schools and educational institutions

  • Restaurants and bars

  • Healthcare facilities

  • Hotels

  • Stadiums and concert venues

  • and more...

The spaces around us can make everyone, everywhere, healthier, happier and more productive. Susanne recently became a Well accredited professional.
